How to make Sazón

If you have made anything from this website, you know that I use at sazón in most of my recipes. Especially if its a stew and the occasional soup. But what happens if you do not have sazon in your arsenal. Don’t fret, because I feel I have cracked the code when it comes to sazón. You can add some “extra ingredients” but with you do not have to. The cool thing is that you would not consume MSG, which some people are really picky about. I’m with Carla Lali Music (food editor at Bon Appétit) who says that the amount of MSG that you eat is not that much to be bad for your health. Especially here where you have only 2 teaspoons when everything else is in tablespoons!

Here’s my Sazon recipe:

No sazon? No Problem! Here’s my homemade version

Yield: 12 servings

Storage: Mason Jar

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon of ground coriander (which is ground cilantro)
1 tablespoon of ground cumin
1 tablespoon of ground anato seeds (achiote powder)
1 tablespoon of turmeric (one of the main ingredients in adobo seasoning to)
1 tablespoon of garlic powder
1 tablespoon of kosher salt
1/2 tablespoon of ground oregano (I use Mexican oregano)
1 teaspoon of ground pepper
1 tablespoon of paprika (If you dont have achiote powder, add 2 tablespoons of paprika)

Put all ingredients in a mason jar and mix! They will store for at least 6 months up to a year.

1 sazon packet = 1.5 teaspoons!
